There’s something magical about bringing water into your outdoor environment. Kansas City has a great climate for koi ponds and we’re seeing more and more people interested in having a fish pond of their own. While building a pond can be a big undertaking, you can DIY it with the right tools and know-how. Here’s what to keep in mind.
Are Ponds High Maintenance?
Ecosystem ponds are low-maintenance ponds
At Good Earth Water Gardens, all the ponds we create are ecosystem ponds. Why? It’s hard to improve upon Mother Nature’s system for clean, healthy ponds.
An ecosystem pond uses circulation, filtration, plants, fish and rock to maintain clear water. Each piece of this puzzle plays an important role. Learn more about how ecosystem ponds work and how you can create and support this environment.
Pond Installation Tips
A Little Planning Goes A Long Way
Water features require imagination and planning. Envision your koi pond in an area where you’ll spend time. Near patios, decks and other seating areas are great locations. Keep in mind the views from your home as well. Many of the people we work with report that much of the enjoyment they get from their water features is from looking out the window to the pond below.
You also want to consider how a pond will fit in with the rest of the yard and landscaping. If you’re having a hard time envisioning how it will all fit together, you may want to work with a landscape designer. A good designer will help blend your pond with existing landscaping and recommend plants to consider in the future.
Water Feature Mechanics Matter
Thanks to the internet, you can purchase pond liner, a pump and filters with the click of a button. But there are big differences in quality. And saving a few bucks now will cost you big in repairs later.
We use only Aquascape products with our water features. We recommend these supplies because they are high quality and designed by experts who know pond design, installation and maintenance. Whether you’re looking for a complete pond kit, LED lights, or installation tools, Aquascape is the place to go.
