## Understanding Koi Pond Maintenance

A breakdown of the most important seasonal tasks for maintaining your water garden:

- Spring Drain & Clean
- Midsummer or Recurring Maintenance
- Fall Netting
- Winterization

## Investment and ongoing care

Our 2026 Inspiration and Pricing Guide lists small koi ponds with a waterfall starting at $15,000 (about 5 by 7 feet) and medium koi ponds starting at $19,000 (about 7 by 10 feet). Larger showcase ponds in the guide run $55,000 to $180,000 as shown.

Seasonal care keeps the water healthy: a spring drain and clean, recurring maintenance through the summer if you want it, fall netting where trees drop leaves, and winterization.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do koi ponds need to be at least four feet deep?

No, that is a common myth. Most of our Kansas City ponds are about two feet deep in the center, and koi do fine through the winter. Water rarely freezes deeper than about eight inches here, which leaves plenty of room for the fish. We do recommend a floating heater or an aerator to keep a hole in the ice so toxic gases can escape and oxygen can get in.

### Does gravel on the bottom of a pond cause more muck and maintenance?

No, the opposite is true. Muck is a natural by-product of decomposing leaves, algae and fish waste, and it builds up in any body of water. Gravel gives muck-eating beneficial bacteria a place to live, so a properly maintained pond with gravel stays much cleaner than one without it. We use rounded gravel because sharp edges could puncture the liner.

### How do you protect koi from herons and raccoons?

We build fish caves into our ponds so koi have a safe place to hide, and we shape steeper drop-offs at the edges because raccoons and cats rarely hunt in deeper water. Heron decoys help keep herons away, and in extreme cases a net over the pond is an option.

### Do ponds need a lot of maintenance?

Not when they are designed and built properly. An ecosystem pond follows the way nature keeps water clean: a skimmer catches debris, bacteria break down waste, plants take up nutrients and rock gives the bacteria a home. Most owners empty the skimmer basket once or twice a week, add bacteria regularly, and schedule a drain and clean each spring and a net each fall.
